Getting Started
Go from zero to your first project in under 2 minutes.
Quick Start (5 Steps)
- Create an account — Go to Sign Up. Enter your email and a password (min 8 characters), or click Sign up with Google or Sign up with GitHub.
- Verify your email — Check your inbox for a verification link. Click it to activate your account. Can’t find it? Check spam, or click Resend Verification Email on the verification page.
- Pick your tech stack — On first login, you’ll see a welcome overlay. Select the technologies you use (React, Node.js, PostgreSQL, etc.). This makes your AI-generated content smarter. You can skip this and set it later.
- Create your first project — Click New Project in the sidebar (or the button on your dashboard). Give it a title and optional description, then click Create Project.
- Watch AI build your execution plan — AI will generate a launch checklist, pitch document, technical spec, and style guide. You’ll see a progress indicator as each step completes (usually 15–30 seconds total).
What You Get
After creating a project, you’ll have:
- AI Launch Checklist — Phase-based tasks tailored to your project.
- AI Pitch Document — A shareable executive summary.
- AI Technical Spec — Architecture, data models, API routes, and deployment plan.
- AI Style Guide — Color palette, typography, and component styles.
- Notepad — Unlimited note tabs for brainstorming.
Common Mistakes
- Skipping email verification — You must verify your email before creating projects. Check your spam folder if you don’t see the email.
- Skipping the tech stack — The AI uses your tech preferences to suggest the right tools. You can always update them later via My Tech Stack in the sidebar.
Creating a Project
Drop in an idea and get a full execution system instantly.
Step-by-Step
- Click New Project in the sidebar or dashboard.
- Choose a mode:
- AI Assisted (default) — AI generates a checklist, pitch, tech spec, and style guide.
- Blank Project — Creates an empty project with just a title and emoji. No AI content.
- Optionally pick an emoji (or leave it empty — AI will choose one for you in AI mode).
- Enter a Project Title (required, max 100 characters). Example: SaaSBuilder.
- Enter a Short Description (optional, max 2,000 characters). The more detail you give, the better the AI output.
- Click Create Project.
What Happens Next
You’re redirected to the project detail page immediately. If you chose AI Assisted mode, you’ll see a progress banner:
- “AI is setting up your project...” with 4 steps: Tasks → Pitch → Tech Spec → Styleguide.
- Each step lights up as it completes. The full chain takes 15–30 seconds.
- You can browse the page while it generates — content appears as each step finishes.
Project Limits
| Plan | Project Limit |
|---|---|
| Free | 3 projects |
| Builder | Unlimited |
Demo projects don’t count toward your limit.
Common Issues
- AI mode is disabled — You’ve used all 3 free AI generations. You can still create blank projects or upgrade.
- Project appears without any AI content — If AI generation fails, the project is saved with empty documents. You can regenerate individual sections later.
AI Generation
How AI creates your checklists, pitch docs, tech specs, and style guides.
How It Works
When you create an AI-assisted project, toomanyideas runs a 4-step generation pipeline:
- Launch Checklist — Generates phase-specific baseline tasks (like “Buy domain,” “Set up Stripe,” “Post on Product Hunt”) plus 5–8 custom tasks based on your project description and tech stack.
- Pitch Document — A 500–800 word executive summary covering problem, solution, audience, timing, and unique angle.
- Technical Specification — Architecture recommendations, data models, API routes, stack selection (based on your tech preferences), MVP scope, and deployment plan.
- Style Guide — Color palette with hex codes, typography recommendations, component styles, spacing rules, and tone of voice.
Stack-Aware AI
The AI uses your selected tech stack to make recommendations relevant to you. If you picked React, Node.js, and PostgreSQL, the tech spec will recommend those tools instead of generic suggestions.
Language Support
AI can generate content in 18 languages. When creating a project, select your preferred language and all AI output will be generated in that language. Technical terms (API, DNS, Stripe, etc.) may remain in English.
Regenerating Content
You can regenerate any individual section at any time:
- Open your project.
- Switch to the tab you want to regenerate (Tasks, Pitch, Tech Spec, or Styleguide).
- Click the purple Regenerate button (marked with an AI icon).
- Wait for the new content to appear.
AI Generation Limits
| Plan | AI Generations |
|---|---|
| Free | 3 total (includes initial generation + any regenerations) |
| Builder | Unlimited |
If Generation Gets Stuck
In rare cases, the AI generation may stall:
- The progress indicator stays on one step for more than 60 seconds.
- Fix: Refresh the page. The project is saved even if generation fails. Any completed sections will be there. You can regenerate the missing sections individually.
Managing Tasks
Your launch checklist — check off tasks, add your own, drag to reorder.
Task Overview
Each project has a Tasks tab with a checklist. Tasks come from two sources:
- AI-generated tasks — Created automatically based on your project’s phase (Idea, Building, etc.) and description.
- Manual tasks — Tasks you add yourself. Unlimited on all plans.
Completing Tasks
- Click the checkbox next to any task to mark it done.
- You’ll see a satisfying animation: checkbox bounce, glow, and a “Done!” micro-toast.
- The progress bar updates instantly.
- When all tasks are complete, you’ll see a “ALL TASKS SHIPPED” celebration banner.
Click a completed task’s checkbox again to uncheck it.
Adding Tasks
- Scroll to the bottom of the task list.
- Type your task in the “Add a task...” input field.
- Click Add or press Enter.
Editing Tasks
- Edit title — Click on any task title to edit it inline. Changes save automatically.
- Add notes — Click the note area below a task (or the “Add a note...” placeholder) to add context. Changes save automatically.
Reordering Tasks
Drag tasks using the handle on the left side to reorder them. The new order is saved instantly.
Deleting Tasks
Click the delete button (trash icon) on a task to remove it. This action is immediate — no confirmation dialog.
Filtering Tasks
Use the filter tabs above the task list:
- All — Shows all tasks.
- To Do — Shows only incomplete tasks.
- Done — Shows only completed tasks.
You can also use the search bar to filter tasks by keyword.
Generating More Tasks
Click the purple Regenerate button on the Tasks tab to ask AI for more tasks. New tasks are appended to your existing list — nothing is deleted. Each regeneration costs 1 AI generation.
Project Phases & Status
Track where each project is in its lifecycle.
The 5 Phases
| Phase | Color | When to Use |
|---|---|---|
| Idea | Gray | Just an idea. Exploring feasibility, doing research. |

| Releasing | Green | Ready to launch or in the process of shipping publicly. |
| Scaling | Purple | Live and growing. Optimizing, marketing, adding features. |
| Paused | Yellow | On hold. Not abandoned, just not active right now. |
Changing a Project’s Phase
- Open the project.
- Click the status tabs at the top (Idea, Building, Releasing, Scaling, Paused).
- The new phase is saved instantly.
You can move in any direction — phases are non-linear. Move a Scaling project back to Building if you need to pivot.

Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to common questions.
Basics
What is toomanyideas?
toomanyideas is a project tracker built for solo founders and indie hackers. You drop in a project idea and the AI creates a launch checklist, pitch document, technical specification, and style guide. It’s not project management — it’s an execution companion that gives every idea instant structure so you can actually ship.
Who is this for?
Solo indie hackers, solopreneurs, and serial builders who start too many projects and finish too few. If you’ve got a notes app full of idea graveyards and domains bought but never used, this is for you.
How is this different from Notion / Linear / Jira?
Those tools are built for teams running sprints. toomanyideas is built for one person running multiple projects. No agile ceremonies, no sprint planning — just a quick way to go from “I have an idea” to “here’s my next step.” Plus, it generates your pitch, spec, and styleguide automatically.
Do I need technical skills to use this?
No. You type a project name and description in plain language. The AI does the rest. The generated tech specs are written for a technical audience, but you don’t need to be a developer to use the checklists, pitch docs, or style guides.
Account
How do I sign up?
Go to Sign Up. You can use email + password, Google, or GitHub. Email accounts need to verify their email before accessing the app. See Getting Started.
I didn’t get the verification email. What do I do?
Check your spam/junk folder. If it’s not there, go to the verification page and click Resend Verification Email. The link is valid for 24 hours.
I forgot my password. How do I reset it?
Go to Forgot Password, enter your email, and click Send Reset Link. Check your inbox for a reset link (valid for 1 hour). Click it and set a new password. See Account & Settings.
Can I log in with Google or GitHub?
Yes. Click Continue with Google or Continue with GitHub on the login or signup page. If your email already has an account, the social login will be automatically linked to it.
Can I change my email address?
Email changes are not currently supported through the UI. Contact support if you need to update your email.
Using the Product
What do I get when I create a project?
If you use AI Assisted mode, you get: (1) a launch checklist with phase-specific tasks, (2) a pitch/executive summary, (3) a technical specification, and (4) a visual style guide. All automatically generated in 15–30 seconds. See AI Generation.
How long does AI generation take?
The full generation pipeline (tasks + pitch + tech spec + styleguide) takes about 15–30 seconds. You can browse the project page while it generates — content appears as each step completes.
Can I edit the AI-generated content?
Absolutely. Click Edit on any document tab (Pitch, Tech Spec, Styleguide) to switch to edit mode. Content is in Markdown format. Changes save automatically. Think of AI as a first draft — customize it to match your vision. See Pitch, Tech Spec & Styleguide.
What are the project phases/statuses?
Every project has one of 5 phases: Idea, Building, Releasing, Scaling, or Paused. You can change the phase anytime by clicking the status tabs on the project page. The AI tailors tasks to the current phase. See Project Phases.
Can I add my own tasks?
Yes. Scroll to the bottom of the task list and type in the “Add a task...” field. Manual tasks are unlimited on all plans. You can also reorder, edit, and delete any task. See Managing Tasks.
What languages does the AI support?
AI can generate content in 18 languages including English, Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and more. Select your language when creating a project. Technical terms may remain in English.
What happens to demo projects?
Demo projects are pre-built samples that show you how the product works. They don’t count toward your project limit, are marked with a DEMO badge, and auto-expire after ~2 days. You can dismiss them anytime.
Limits & Plans
What’s included in the free plan?
3 projects, 3 AI generations (total, not per project), unlimited manual tasks, unlimited project notepad tabs, and 5 global notepad notes. See Billing & Plans.
What counts as an “AI generation”?
Creating an AI-assisted project (initial generation) counts as 1. Each individual regeneration of Tasks, Pitch, Tech Spec, or Styleguide also counts as 1. Blank projects don’t use AI generations.
What happens when I hit the limit?
You’ll see an “Upgrade” prompt. You can still use manual features (add tasks, edit documents, write notes), but you can’t create new AI-assisted projects or regenerate AI content. Upgrade to Builder to remove all limits.
Can I get a refund?
Yes. Refunds are available on request. Email [email protected] with your account email and reason.
What happens to my data if I cancel?
Your projects, tasks, and notes are not deleted when you cancel. You keep all your data. You just can’t create new projects beyond the free limit or use AI generations beyond the free allowance. See Billing.
Do you offer yearly billing?
Yes. The Builder plan is $12/mo monthly or $96/yr yearly (save 33%). Choose your billing interval on the Billing or Upgrade page.
Privacy & Security
Do you sell my data?
No. We don’t sell, share, or monetize your data in any way. See Security & Privacy.
What data does the AI see?
The AI receives your project title, description, current tasks, and your tech stack preferences to generate content. No personal information (email, password, billing) is sent to the AI. AI responses are not stored by the AI provider beyond the request.
Can I export my data?
Yes. Go to Settings → My Data → Export My Data. You’ll download a JSON file with your account info, projects, tasks, and notes. See Data Export.
Can I delete my account?
Yes. Go to Settings → My Data → Delete My Account. It’s a 2-step confirmation. Your data is purged within 30 days. See Account Deletion.
Troubleshooting
The AI generation is stuck. What do I do?
Refresh the page. Your project is saved even if generation fails. Any completed sections will be there. You can regenerate missing sections individually using the purple Regenerate button on each tab. See Troubleshooting.
I got “Something went wrong. Try again.” What happened?
This is a generic server error. Refresh the page and try again. If it keeps happening, contact support with the page URL and what you were doing.
My crypto payment is stuck on “Processing.”
Crypto payments require blockchain confirmation, which can take a few minutes. The page updates automatically. If it’s been more than 30 minutes, contact support with your payment reference.
